Domains & Intellectual Property

The domain doesn't move until the money does. Neither moves first.

Domain and IP sales have a unique failure mode: transfers are hard to reverse once initiated. NEFIMS confirms funds are secured before the seller starts the transfer, and confirms the transfer is complete before funds release.

Why It Matters

Where domain deals go wrong.

Seller transfers first, buyer stalls on payment

Funds are confirmed held before any transfer request goes out.

Buyer pays, transfer never completes

Funds stay in escrow until the registrar confirms the new owner on record.

Unclear IP rights included in the deal

Agreement terms spell out exactly what's transferred — domain only, or trademark and content too.

The Process

Matched to how registrar transfers actually work.

Step 1

Agree on assets & terms

Specify the domain, any associated IP, and the registrar transfer process both sides will use.

Step 2

Buyer funds escrow

Payment is confirmed held before the seller unlocks the domain for transfer.

Step 3

Confirm & release

Once the buyer confirms ownership on the registrar, funds release to the seller.

Fees for Domains & IP

What it costs

3.0% of transaction value, minimum $20.

Rate reflects the added verification step of confirming registrar-level ownership transfer.

Domain deals live or die on timing — you don't want to be the one who moved first. Escrow meant neither of us had to be.

Common Questions

Before you start

NEFIMS supports confirmation across all major registrars — the agreement specifies which one applies to your transfer.

Include that in the agreement terms as part of what's being transferred, with its own inspection criteria.

Standard ICANN transfer windows apply (typically 5–7 days) — escrow stays open for the full window.

Buy or sell a domain without the timing risk.
